Overview
The project aims at improving road safety and traffic flows especially in the urban area of cities and villages. The main outcome of the project is a methodology for designing control strategies of traffic lights during off-peak period. Application of the methodology can to determine if traffic lights control should be utilised during this period. Within the project will be designed and tested decision-making algorithm depends on the current traffic volumes and possibly other input variables. Factors of safety, fluency, but also fuel economy will be taken into account. As a support tool will be use a microscopic traffic flow simulation for testing effects of various control algorithms and traffic volume alternatives on selected intersections. Results will be use for recommendations and methodology development.

Results
- Simulation study of traffic lights usage, transport characteristics and accidentally at intersections in off-peak times
- Several scenarios of traffic lights management were tested which helped to quantify losses and traffic flows fluency of particular management strategies, as well as environmental impact of these
- Determination of the effect of intersection control mode on vehicle delay time, published paper
- Methodology for application of suitable traffic lights management strategies
