Overview

Background & Policy context

The creation of durable constructions requires an understanding of the processes occurring damage mechanisms as well as on the impact and effectiveness of different measures.

A major cause of the damage of transport infrastructure constructions is the induced chloride corrosion. This happens In particular for transport infrastructures under splashing stress but there are still no good models for predictions regarding the durability. Both the corrosion as well as the initiation phase can not be described with sufficient accuracy.

Objectives

The project allows long-term study (since 2000) of the effectiveness of different methods and increasing the durability under real exposure conditions. It will provide knowledge in the following fields:

  • Effect of different concrete and steel qualities and concrete cover on the initiation of the corrosion and the corrosion rate, under the special aspect of increasing age.
  • Quantification of long-term effects on the water content of concrete and on the chloride penetration into concrete
  • Correlation between performance in the laboratory and in situ
Methodology
  • Field and laboratory experiments,
  • modeling,
  • ongoing study of literature.

On-site measurements:
More or less unchanged use of the built-in test stand test plates for further measurements until 2012. Extension of the measurement intervals for automatic data capture on 30 minutes. Around 4 to 6 times a year reading the data and manual measurements. The collected data are continuously recorded and monitored.

Laboratory measurements to assess the capillary water and chloride absorption:

The experiments are carried out on reference samples of the preparation of the test plates. From the measurements, the water absorption and water absorption rate as a function of time and the water absorption coefficient can be determined at different times. With these results, correlations can be further determined using the effective conduct spot.

Finalisation:
In the spring 2012, drill core will be taken in all plates and the chloride profiles. To check the sensors of the chloride sensors analyzes will be carried out at the site. To determine the cross-sectional losses in the various steels, around half of all panels will be expanded and taken apart.
