Overview

Background & Policy context

The Action is part of the Global Project “Electrifying Short Sea Shipping” which consists of a gradual electrification of maritime transport on the Gothenburg (SE)-Kiel (DE) and Gothenburg (SE)-Frederikshavn (DK) routes.

The Action prepares for phase 2 of the Global Project and consist of a study looking into the creation of two large Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) for storing electricity, which would allow for charging ships fitted with batteries. These ESSs are to be placed in the ports of Gothenburg and Kiel.

Objectives

The Global Project aims to tap into the opportunities offered by the battery sector for maritime transport, and to offer a solution for a sustainable battery value chain. The overall objective of the Action is to provide sustainable solutions to boost electrification of the maritime sector using lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries on vessels.
