Objectives

The objective of the SPIDER PLUS project is to provide a new 2050 mobility VISION through a Strategic Design & Plan, and a Road Map delivering Sustainable Solutions by then. In this plan electrified rail has a central role both for passengers and freight.

The productivity of the available resources supported by ICT and other technologies, is maximised by the combination of infrastructural nodes with spatial and urban planning integrating the missing links for sustainable mobility and city logistics. The combination of the Time with Space management generates seamless transport chains reducing aggravations and costs.

E/Service, E/Freight, ICT technologies, satellite communications, Galileo are tools for achieving these objectives. Syncro-Mobility is the 2050 SPIDER PLUS MOBILITY motto.

Results

Achieving seamless mobility for future rail

The European Commission is pushing for much more rail transport, aiming for a 50 % shift in freight transport from road to rail by 2050. To achieve this ambitious goal, an EU initiative is creating a vision for sustainable mobility.

The shared use of vehicles has not caught on, and lorries are still the preferred choice for the shipment of goods. Emissions are steadily on the rise due to such trends. This has left European public and private stakeholders looking for ways to respond to future mobility demands in sustainable ways.

With EU funding, the http://www.spiderplus-project.eu/ (SPIDER PLUS) project is developing a passenger and freight mobility vision for 2050. At the heart of this concept lies an efficient, attractive and environmentally friendly railway serving passengers and freight. Innovative and sustainable transport solutions are needed to achieve seamless transportation with electrified rail.

Work began with an analysis of the present situation and the projected changes concerning market offer and demand for both passengers and freight. Gaps between market offer and demand in meeting end-user expectations have also been identified.

Project partners identified and assessed the major trends that will influence the vision of a society primarily served by electrified rail. Based on these results, they developed and then elaborated a vision for a rail-based European society in the coming decades. The focus is on high-speed rail, rail freight corridors, local transportation, urban and regional planning, and industrial production and associated business processes.

SPIDER PLUS is helping to shape the future of a society mostly served by electrified rail. It envisions all key actors embracing seamless transportation to meet their mobility needs.
