Research and standardisation in the field of road and transportation in Switzerland.
The Swiss Association of Road and Transportation Experts (VSS) is an important player in the field of transport research in Switzerland. It is a union of professionals, companies and institutions that deal with planning, designing, construction, operation, maintenance, use and dismantling of traffic facilities.
The research of the VSS is used for development and extension of application-oriented expertise in road and transportation. It depends on the requirements of the Department of Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC), the Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) and the Swiss Federal Commission for roads (Foko).
The funds for research come from excise taxes on mineral oils. The amount allocated by the federal government amounts this year to around CHF 9 million. The VSS supports around 40% of current research Swiss projects.
Projects are formulated by experts, advertised, evaluated and supported. A multi-stage approval process ensures the quality, compliance and the benefits of research projects. The research projects´ results will be completed in a final report. The published research reports are available in the shop of the VSS.
